What is gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections, especially in the population between 16 and 30 years of age. It is a bacterium that can infect the genitals , throat or rectum.

When the infection is diagnosed early, it is easily cleared by the appropriate antibiotic. Without treatment, it can cause long-term complications term as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) in women, a painful inflammation of the testicular ducts in men, or it can infect other places through the blood such as joints.

What are the symptoms of gonorrhoea?

Gonorrhoea can be present without symptoms, especially in vaginal, throat, or rectal infections; so whenever you have sex unprotected, the only way to rule out having contracted gonorrhoea is by performing tests.

In the throat and straight almost every Infections are asymptomatic, but complications can appear in the rectum, such as itching around the anus, bleeding, and pain when defecating. In the throat can cause symptoms of pharyngitis.

How is gonorrhoea transmitted and when should I be tested?

Gonorrhoea is transmitted performing unprotected oral, vaginal or anal sex, without ejaculation being necessary for this to occur. Since it is present without symptoms, when you have unprotected sex, you always have to get tested for gonorrhoea.
