What is Mycoplasma genitalium?
Mycoplasma genitalium is a sexually transmitted disease, after gonorrhoea and chlamydia, it is the third leading cause of genital infection. This is a rather particular genus of bacteria, which makes it resistant to the vast majority of conventional antibiotics, so it requires special treatment.
If you take the test at the Open clinics House, the result will tell us if the bacteria is resistant or not to a specific antibiotic. If carrying out the test with our home tests, we treat this bacterium according to the treatment guidelines recommended by leading organisations in the field.
What are the symptoms of Mycoplasma genitalium?
One of the main problems is that Mycoplasma genitalium can often present without symptoms. However, sometimes symptoms ranging from pelvic pain , abnormal vaginal discharge, itching, pain during sex, proctitis or pain and difficulty urinating can be present. Because these symptoms can easily be confused with other diseases, it is important to test for Mycoplasma genitalium if unprotected vaginal or anal sex has been engaged in.
How is Mycoplasma genitalium transmitted and why should I get tested?
Mycoplasma genitalium is transmitted by unprotected vaginal or anal penetrations. Its possible transmission through oral sex is still being studied, but at the moment it has not been proven.
You should take the test for two simple reasons. The first, to know that you are infected and not infect your sexual partners. The second, to be able to administer the necessary treatment to end Mycoplasma genitalium.
