What is Syphilis?

What are the symptoms of Syphilis?

Syphilis has 4 different phases:

The primary infection results in an ulcer commonly called a chancre. This chancre is painless, therefore If it's in an invisible area, you don't know you have it.
The latent phase is a phase without symptoms and can last a long time. In this phase, the patient is perfectly fine and the only way to detect syphilis is by testing.
Secondary infection is characterised by skin lesions that are not usually bothersome or itchy and manifest to a large extent of the body.
In its last stage, called neuro-syphilis, neurological complications can occur in the patient.

How is Syphilis transmitted, and when should I get tested?

Syphilis is transmitted through all types of sexual relations (oral, vaginal or anal). To avoid transmission it is important to take precautions using a condom and, if possible, having unprotected sex with people who perform STI tests.
