What is Chlamydia?
Chlamydia is a bacterial infection that can be contracted through unprotected sexual intercourse. It is one of the sexually transmitted diseases most common, with some 50 million cases worldwide every year. Anyone who is sexually active can get chlamydia, even if it comes in forms more common among the younger population.
What are the symptoms of chlamydia?
One of the main problems with chlamydia or gonorrhoea is that a high percentage of infections do not present symptoms . In fact only 25% of people who become infected show any symptoms.
Some of the most common symptoms are a burning sensation when urinating , white, green, or yellow discharge from the penis, and pain in the testicles in men. In the case of women it can produce a foul smelling vaginal discharge, pain during sex, and bleeding between periods.
Both men and women can also get chlamydia in the rectum or throat. In the rectum, the symptoms would be anal discharge, itching, pain, and bleeding. In the throat it almost never shows symptoms, but if there were, they would be similar to pharyngitis.
How is Chlamydia transmitted and why should I get tested?
Getting tested for chlamydia is very important when having unprotected sex. First of all, if you suspect you are infected stop having sex until you have received treatment, to limit its transmission.
Secondly, because it is a disease that must be treated to avoid serious complications, especially in women. If untreated, chlamydia pelvic inflammatory disease can develop that can lead to infertility.
Thirdly, testing is essential if you are pregnant or trying to have a child, as it can be transmitted to the foetus, or cause complications in childbirth, premature births or ectopic pregnancy.
