What Are Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea?

Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are bacterial infections responsible for STIs/STDs, meaning they can only be transmitted through unprotected sexual contact or when a barrier method fails or is defective. Depending on the site of infection (penis, cervix, vagina, or rectum), they may cause no symptoms or lead to conditions such as pharyngitis, urethritis (inflammation of the urethra), prostatitis, cervicitis (cervix inflammation), or proctitis (rectal inflammation).

How Are Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea Diagnosed?

There are various tests available to diagnose both STIs/STDs, including cultures, rapid tests sold in pharmacies, blood serology, and PCR testing. Rapid tests are unreliable and lack specificity, often resulting in a high rate of false negatives. Serology does not indicate the exact location of the infection or distinguish between a current and past infection. While cultures can detect gonorrhoea, they do not identify chlamydia. Currently, the gold standard for diagnosing chlamydia and gonorrhoea is the PCR test, which detects and amplifies the genetic material (DNA) of both bacteria.

What Sample Is Needed for a PCR Test?

Since these STIs/STDs are localised, the type of sample required depends on symptoms or the nature of unprotected sexual practices. For example, if you experience pain when urinating and have discharge from the urethra, a urine sample should be collected. Alternatively, if you have only engaged in unprotected oral sex with a partner who has been diagnosed with genital chlamydia, a throat swab should be taken. Samples can also be collected from the cervix, rectum, or even semen (in cases of prostate or testicular infection).

Can Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea Be Cured?

Both infections, being bacterial, can be treated with antibiotics. Chlamydia is treated with oral antibiotics, while gonorrhoea requires an intramuscular injection. It is crucial for your healthcare provider to be aware of any allergies or relevant medical conditions that may require an alternative antibiotic treatment.
