Is bacterial vaginosis an STI? The answer is a clear NO. Is it still linked to sexual activity? In this case, we have to say yes.

What is bacterial vaginosis?

Many women experience, at some point in their lives, episodes of increased vaginal discharge that is watery, greenish/grey in appearance and has a “fishy” smell. These symptoms are usually caused by a condition known as bacterial vaginosis (BV).

This happens because the normal vaginal flora becomes imbalanced, with a reduction in lactobacilli. This leads to an increase in vaginal pH and, consequently, an overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria. The bacterium most commonly responsible for these symptoms is Gardnerella vaginalis, although there are many others (in our clinics we also detect Mycoplasma hominis and Ureaplasma species).

Why can this imbalance occur?

Anything that affects the vaginal environment and alters its natural conditions can trigger it, such as:

  • Taking antibiotics.
  • Vaginal douching or the use of harsh soaps.
  • Smoking.
  • Use of an intrauterine device (IUD) or hormonal contraceptives.
  • Sexual intercourse without a condom.
  • Changes in sexual partners.
  • Hormonal changes or menstruation itself.
  • A weakened immune system or stress.
  • A previous history of bacterial vaginosis.

Can bacterial vaginosis be treated?

Of course. As it is a bacterial infection, our doctors will prescribe the appropriate treatment if we detect it.

It is important not to self-medicate and to always avoid vaginal douching, internal soaps or excessive washing (even if you think this might help, it is actually counterproductive).

Recurrence is common; if this happens, you should consult your doctor again.

Therefore…

If you notice a strong odour or a change in the colour of your vaginal discharge, it is not due to poor hygiene but to an imbalance in your microbiota. It is important not to feel embarrassed — this is a common condition and easy to treat. However, it is very important that you do not self-diagnose and that you consult a specialist doctor.

And remember…

Their presence is a risk factor for acquiring other STIs, so don’t forget to get tested regularly.

If you experience any symptoms consistent with bacterial vaginosis, our state-of-the-art tests and specialist medical team provide the best assurance to address the condition as quickly as possible.
