HIV and AIDS testing

Nationally awarded Clinics in 2016, 2018, 2020, 2023 and 2024 for health and business quality

At Open House we offer three different tests for HIV or AIDS. To determine which HIV test is relevant in your situation, you must take into account the time elapsed since the risk contact you are concerned about – i.e. consider the window period. All of our STI tests and HIV test have a sensitivity greater than 99%, and we deliver the results in a maximum of 90 minutes in our physical clinics.

What is HIV and AIDS?

HIV is a virus that attacks very aggressively and gradually destroys the immune system of the infected person if left untreated, rendering the body incapable of dealing with any other infection. When the defences of infected people have been reduced to very low levels, AIDS occurs.

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is the state of decline in the defences due to having the HIV virus (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and not receiving treatment to control it. There are two different types: HIV- 1 and HIV-2. In Europe more than 99% of the cases are of type 1.

What are the symptoms of HIV and AIDS?

The acute infection stage usually goes unnoticed, but occasionally there are flu-like manifestations (fever, malaise, sore throat, and swollen glands). Then there is a stage of asymptomatic infection and finally, if treatment is not received , AIDS develops. This stage is related to the presence of diseases such as wasting syndrome and a series of opportunistic infections that, having inactive defences, can even cause death.

How is HIV transmitted, and when should I get an HIV test:

It is not transmitted by:

Sweat, tears, saliva or urine, therefore, it is not transmitted by kissing, hugging, caressing or shaking hands. Nor by sharing utensils, food or drinks, visiting a hospital or going to the doctor, using public transport or using the same toilets as an HIV-positive person.
