Testing for Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
This test is particularly important for women, as the presence of oncogenic strains of human papillomavirus should lead to an increase in more extensive monitoring than is provided by normal cervical screenings. Spanish guidelines suggest that women over the age of 30 should get this test every 5 years.
Testing for Human Papillomavirus at Open House clinics:
We perform these tests using the PCR technique, which have been shown to be more accurate and provide faster results than other techniques. Results can come back in 1 hour if we only check for high-risk strains or in 24-48 hours if we perform a complete study and typing. The cost of both tests is €100.
This is the most common sexually transmitted infection:
It is estimated that 25% of the sexually active population is infected with this virus the first time they have sex. Throughout our sex lives, we will be infected with various strains, and we will become resistant to most, with our body fighting them off naturally.
The virus causes genital warts but can also be present without the manifestation of any symptoms. Normally there are no complications, but there are high-risk strains that may cause cancer. If you have any questions, our specialist physicians can give you advice at a medical consultation.
- Types 16, 18, 31 and 45 are considered the most dangerous; over time, these strains can lead to the development of cervical cancer.
- There is a vaccine against the most common and dangerous strains. Talk to your gynaecologist for more information.
- Condom use reduces the possibility of getting an infection, but does not eliminate it, therefore, taking tests every 5 years and going to periodic gynaecology check-ups are the best preventative measures.
Open House treats genital warts with cryotherapy (freezing) with millimetric precision. The process is generally painless and lasts less than 10 minutes. In complicated cases, we use pharmaceutical products that are toxic to warts or immunostimulant drugs. The price is €65.
