I would like to get tested for syphilis.....

Watch this video of our medical director explaining our experience in the diagnosis and treatment of syphilis

(1) I've never been diagnosed with syphilis before and I want to do a test:

We can offer you a highly senstive test with results in just 15 minutes.

The detection of syphilis with specific IgG & IgM antibody tests (like ours) are unbeatable in performance (sensitity and specificity).

SIfilisICONO

....but what if I have been diagnosed with syphilis in the past?

What do I do?

14% more effective

According to our own clinical study, which was published recently in the journal Point of Care our test detects 14% more cases than the best of the conventional tests (for example RPR, VDRL, FTA, TPHA etc). You can read how we did this study by clicking here..

99.2% clinical success

Open House is becoming a centre with specialist interest in syphilis, and if you have a positive test result today, we can start treatment immediately. We manage to succesfully erradicated syphilis in 98.2% of cases, which is much higher than figures seen in other studies published in this field of work.

3 weeks period windows

Warning! It is important that a minumum time period has gone by since the last high risk contact before doing the test, if you don’t have symptoms compatible with syphilis.

The test we use in Open House detects 99% of infections once 3 weeks have gone by since the last sexual contact. But if you have symptoms that could well be syphilis, we don’t wait out this period and you can do the test straight away.

As always, Open House recommends that you ask to be shown studies supporting claims if you decide to do this test in another clinic and they say it can be done prior to the 3 week watershed. But remember, we can always do this test without waiting if you have worrying symptoms.

1 in 7 + Syphilis

One in every seven men who have sex with other men and come to Open House is positive for syphilis.

x 5 risk VIH

Having syphilis multiplies by five the possibility of catching HIV.

(2) I've had syphilis diagnosed in the past and need to do a test again:

The rapid test that we do in Open House cannot be used in people who have had syphilis in the past. It is so sensitive that it would detect antibodies that persist from the old infection despite having been correctly treated at that time.
So we have to do a laboratory test – a test that is specific to current infections only, and there are two possiblities. Each one has its advantages and disadvantages which we will explain below.

TestRPRIgM
Which one is most often used in SpainX
Which one is recommended by international syphilis guidelines?X

Worried? come to the clinic and tell us about your case - at Open House we can help you get the test results you need to ensure your total peace of mind.

Open House scrutinises the performance of all its tests. Below you can read more about the level of detection of both tests which helps to explain why one is the recommended test in European guidelines (IgM).

TestRPRIgM
Overall detection of syphilis cases:7699
Are there false positives because of having had syphilis in the past?X
Which one is better at detecting silent/hidden cases?X

At Open House, you need to consider these two factors before deciding on one test or the other.

Do I have to pay a surcharge ?NoYes, 20 €
When do I get the results?48 Hours1 week

¿Can we help you?

Confused? Three suggestions ...

1Give us a call to make an appointment and we will take the decision jointly. If you could bring any old results you may have we will review your case.

2Trust in our clinical judgement. We’ve a track record of 98.2% erradication of syphilis infections, a level of success better than the majority of cases published in medical literature. We consider syphilis our special interest.

3Warning! It is important that a minumum time period has gone by since the last high risk contact before doing the test, if you don’t have symptoms compatible with syphilis right now.

I want to learn more about primary, secondary & latent syphilis and symptoms:

(1) Primary syphilis: if you can't see it, you don't know you have it

A visible chancre:

The typical presentation of primary syphilis is an ulcer in the genital area or in the mouth some weeks after oral, vaginal or anal sex. The surprising thing about these chancres is that they do not hurt despite being quite deep. They often have raised edges and are red.

Syphilis in oral sex:

More than 65% of cases we see in Open House have been caught in just oral sex.

A hidden chancre:

If the infection has ocurred in the throat, inside the vagina or inside the anus, you will not know it is there because it doesn't hurt.

Considerably contagious:

The risk of catching syphilis in oral, vaginal or anal sex with someone infected is about 40%.
chancro_sifilis_sr

Not all ulcers we see are due to syphilis. They may be be herpes, chancroid or other causes.

(2) Secondary syphilis: skin rashes and unwellness

Secondary +/- primary:

Secondary syphilis is the next phase after a chancre, ocurring some weeks later. Half of all patients with secondary syphilis in Open House do not remember having had a chancre.

Rash +/- other symptoms:

As in primary syphilis, the skin rashes of secondary syphilis are not painful or itchy. The typical rash can be seen in this photo, there are no raised bumps and is present all over the entire body.
There may be deep lesions on the hands or feet, swollen glands, hair loss, fever at nighttime, tiredness, but these symptoms are less common.
Secondary syphilis can often manifest itself as other strange skin changes such as false warts, circles on genital skin, or mouth and anal ulcers. Additionally a patient can be between primary and secondary syphilis (called latent syphilis). Please read on for more information

Worried? come and see us and tell us what about your case - at Open House we can help you get the test results you need to ensure your total peace of mind.

(3) Latent syphilis: asymptomatic & common disease:

Defined by the absence of symptoms:

Latent syphilis is the phase between primary and secondary syphilis. It has not symptoms and can last weeks, months or even years. In this stage, the patient feels perfectly well.

Lack of symptoms is a common situation

Some 25% of all syphilis we see in Open House is in this stage. Syphilis cases have increased in Europe by some 500% in the last 20 years.
